The Skullcandy Hesh 3 are inexpensive, straightforward wireless headphones that will delight bass enthusiasts searching for a pair of headphones that just do their job.

The bass-heavy sound signature of Skully Candy is there with the Hesh 3 as expected, but it is not overpowering. Rap, EDM, and pop music sound amazing because of all the bass, but it won’t satisfy audiophiles who want a more balanced approach. In addition, you won’t find any glitzy features like auto play/pause, active noise cancellation, or a carrying case, but you wouldn’t expect them to be included for the price.

The Skullcandy Hesh 3 have a simple, rather basic design that should appeal to most people. Soft-touch plastic was used in the construction of the headphones, which feels great in the hand, doesn’t absorb fingerprints, and results in a relatively lightweight headphone. There are four color options for the Hesh 3 black, blue, red, and gray. If you don’t wear glasses, there are faux-leather ear and headband pads that are cozy. The earpads are flexible, but the tight clamping force will make individuals wearing spectacles or with large heads unpleasant for long sessions.

Nevertheless, the pads effectively wipe out background noise without the need of active noise cancellation. The headphones give a ton of bass and an astounding level of noise blocking with a decent seal. The right earcup houses all of the headphones’ controls. There are simply three buttons: one for power, one for playback, and one for volume. Your voice assistant, like as Siri or Google Assistant, will be activated by double tapping the middle button.

Although the Hesh 3 are Bluetooth headphones, they don’t come with additional extras like aptX HD or active noise cancelling. Soundstage is average with decent width, depth, and headroom, which converts to a slightly above-average separation between instruments and vocals.  Although it lacks the detail found in higher-priced cans, the midrange is actually rather good at reproducing both male and female vocals.

Strings would benefit from having a quicker response, but as it is, the midrange should be suitable for the majority of contemporary musical styles. The Hesh 3’s bass is undoubtedly one of its notable features because it hits forcefully. Quantity makes up for what it lacks in sophistication. Skrillex and Infected Mushroom’s bass drops on a variety of EDM songs sounded great and undoubtedly caused heart palpitations. Although you would anticipate that from something that works so hard on the low end, there is a tiny leak into the lower mids.

The headphones produce powerful deep lows on songs with heavy sub-bass content, such as The Knife’s “Silent Shout.” Low frequencies sound rich and well-defined at moderate volumes; at greater volumes, things sound even more powerful; nonetheless, even at the loudest, most reckless listening volumes, the drivers never distort. Even on this track, there is plenty of high frequency presence to balance things out despite the track’s strong bass response.

Bill Callahan’s “Drover,” a track with far less low end in the mix, gives us a better sense of the overall sound signature. The drums get a solid bass presence in this track without ever sounding too overblown or thunderous. Callahan’s baritone vocals also get a nice fullness in the low mids, but the real story here is the high mids and treble. Vocals get a crisp treble edge, and guitar strums and percussive attacks also get a bright, well-defined presence. Even tape noise seems to be lifted a bit on this track. It’s not that the headphones sound thin, brittle, or overly bright-they deliver excellent clarity in the high frequencies and don’t overdo it with boosting and shaping the low frequencies.

With the Hesh 3 Bluetooth headphones, the typically excessive Skullcandy company seems to be refining both its design and sound signature. The $129.99 headphones have almost no design flourishes; they appear empty. That in itself is a statement, but the other notable aspect is a balanced, clear sound. Bass is strongly present but never overdone, and the high mids and treble are arguably more to the fore. It is a good new look (and sound) for the company, and a solid option in this price range.
