Following weeks of superheroes and animated mischief at the box office, Universal Pictures is launching the theatrical debut of Jordan Peele’s sci-fi thriller Nope, headlined by the director’s 2017 breakout movie (Get Out) star Daniel Kaluuya.

The film, about caretakers at a California horse ranch who encounter a mysterious force that affects human and animal behavior, has generated an 82% Rotten Tomatoes score among more than 100 online critics. Industry estimates see the movie generating from $40 million to $50 million in three-day ticket sales across North American screens.

That should be enough to hold off returning box office toppers Disney/Marvel Studios’ Thor: Love and Thunder ($20 million), Universal/Illumination’s Minions: The Rise of Gru ($18.5 million), Sony 3000 Pictures’ Where the Crawdads Sing ($9.6 million), and Paramount Pictures’ enduring overall (to-date) 2022 box office leader Top Gun: Maverick ($9.3 million).
