We’ve got no less than five new disc reviews for you all to enjoy today, with still more on the way…

Tim has reviewed Stephen Soderbergh’s Out of Sight (1998) on 4K Ultra HD from Kino Lorber Studio Classics, as well as Kenneth Branagh’s Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (1994) on 4K Ultra HD from Arrow Video.

Dennis has offered his thoughts on David Lean’s Summertime (1955) on regular Blu-ray from the Criterion Collection.

And Stephen has taken a look at William Malone’s Scared to Death (1980) on Blu-ray from Vinegar Syndrome, as well as Luis Bunuel’s The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972) on import 4K Ultra HD from StudioCanal in the UK.

We’ve also got some significant new 4K Ultra HD catalog news today as well… [Read on here...]

You may recall that we mentioned on Monday that Sony Pictures Home Entertainment was working on a new Columbia Classics 4K Ultra HD Collection: Volume 3 box set for release in time for the holidays, and that our industry sources were indicating that As Good As It Gets (1997) and From Here to Eternity (1953) were among the titles expected to be included. We’ve now learned from Spanish retail sources that Annie (1982), The Last Picture Show (1971), and It Happened One Night (1934) are likely to be included as well. We’ll post official details as soon as Sony announces them.

Kino Lorber Studio Classics has officially set their anticipated 4K Ultra HD release of Martin McDonagh’s In Bruges (2008) for 9/27. The disc will include a new Dolby Vision HDR grade supervised by cinematographer Eigil Bryld.

Lionsgate has revealed that they’re going to be releasing a new Best Buy-exclusive 4K UHD Steelbook version of James Mangold’s 3:10 to Yuma on 9/6.

Speaking of Best Buy-exclusive Steelbooks, Universal will be releasing a 4K Steelbook version of Halloween Kills (2021) on 9/6 via the retailer as well.

We’ve also learned from retail sources that Paramount will release Scream 2 on 4K Ultra HD in October, and that Wayne’s World is likely to follow on 4K UHD in November. Also coming from Paramount on 4K UHD in November is a title we’ve been expecting since late last year: Saturday Night Fever (1977).

And since we’re on the subject of Paramount 4K, I’ve been working all week to find out more specifically what “additional legacy bonus content” would be included on the studio’s forthcoming Star Trek: The Motion Picture – Director’s Edition release on 4K and Blu-ray. As you’re probably aware, I made post here on Tuesday on the topic. Well, I’m very pleased now to present a confirmed list of the disc-based extras included in the set, including the complete bonus disc contents:

THE DIRECTOR’S EDITION (4K Ultra HD & Blu-ray Disc):

THEATRICAL CUT / SPECIAL LONGER VERSION (4K Ultra HD) – NEW – This disc will ONLY be available in The Complete Adventure 4K UHD box set and will not be released separately. Both versions are included via seamless branching and there is no Blu-ray version.

BLU-RAY BONUS DISC (Blu-ray Disc):

NOTE: Two additional features—Audio Commentary with Michael & Denise Okuda, Judith & Garfield Reeves-Stevens, and Daren Dochterman and a Library Computer Viewing Mode—were included on the Theatrical Cut 4K & Blu-ray release in the 2020 Star Trek: The Original 4-Movie Collection box set. These may also be included on the new THEATRICAL CUT / SPECIAL LONGER VERSION 4K Ultra HD disc, but we have yet to confirm this.

* You can find additional details on these previously-unseen deleted scenes from producer David C. Fein here via Star Trek.com.

So there you go—this will truly be a complete release, carrying over virtually every previous home video special feature created for this film on DVD and Blu-ray in addition to much all-new content.

In fact, as far as I can tell, once all of these Original Series Trek films are released in 4K, the only legacy extras that won’t carry over are a pair of remaining Roger Lay, Jr. documentaries that were created for the 2016 50th Anniversary Collection bonus disc: The Dream is Alive: The Continuing Mission, which was missing from the Star Trek IV Blu-ray/4K special features (released in 2021), and End of an Era: Charting the Undiscovered Country, which does not seem to be listed in the forthcoming Star Trek VI Blu-ray/4K special features. (Rest assured I’ve asked the studio about them.)

Finally today, there’s been some question among fans about Shout! Factory’s forthcoming Blu-ray release of The Bionic Woman: The Complete Series, specifically which versions of the episodes would be included on the discs and whether certain audio issues apparent in past releases would be corrected. We asked Shout! about this a few weeks back, and they’ve now completed their investigation on the issue and issued the following statement:

“For this first ever Blu-ray release of The Bionic Woman, Shout! Factory has used the episode masters supplied to us by our licensor, which were transferred in 2010 from interpositive film elements struck from the original negatives. Due to forces outside of anyone’s control, the original broadcast versions of the series are no longer in existence, and these masters supplied to us are the best known masters available today. During the production process for this set, we were made aware that previous home entertainment editions of The Bionic Woman had audio issues relating to these masters. While we did not use any unapproved or unverified sources, we have done some additional work to the most affected episodes to tweak the audio quality to best match what fans remember from the original run.”

So there you go; adjust your plans accordingly.

All right, we’ll leave you with a look at the cover artwork for a couple of the titles mentioned above and more (including Sony’s Fright Night 4K, which is now available for pre-order on Amazon). Just click on the covers to visit their respective pre-order pages…

That’s all for now. Stay tuned...
